Johnny Depp stole Elvis Costello's shirt.

That's the only explanation for the outfit Johnny wore on Letterman this Thursday. Specifically the odd Western shirt.

But not to worry. Elvis has many more. He's very, very fond of Western shirts.

    Almost to a fault.

Note the resemblance here. In these photos, both are at the David Letterman theatre:

Maybe they should both start stealing their clothing from someone else. Hopefully someone who isn't quite so fond of Western shirts...

    Argh

So tomorrow is my bday. Instead of dreaming that Elvis shows up on my doorstep as a present or something nice like that, last night I had a nightmare that Elvis and Diana were coming to visit and I had to play host. When they arrived I realized I was wearing a big, old Elvis concert t-shirt and looked horrible. Diana had bleached and curled her hair, and her voice was suddenly extremely high. I was disappointed because her alto voice is probably what I like best about her. It was like she had transformed into a boring, pretty little pop singer. I don't remember what Elvis was doing.

I wake up feeling quite stressed when I have dreams like that. I've only dreamed about Diana once before, which makes this dream even stranger.

A few nights before that I dreamed Shane MacGowan was doing a concert in my bedroom, though. So that was slightly better.

    Top 5 Meme

The Music Memoirs challenge this week:

Top 5 songs you currently can't get enough of:

Herman's Hermits - Can't You Hear My Heartbeat (not only do I now have this on CD, but it also came on in a restaurant a few days ago!)

    Kirsty MacColl - Free World

Shane MacGowan - I'll Be Your Handbag (I have no idea why I'm so amused by lines as silly as:

    "I'll be your handbag/
But I'd rather be your negligee"

    Duran Duran - Perfect Day

    The Pogues - Sayonara

    More Concert News

I'm going to post more photos from the July 10 show, which I have been, erm, listening to over the past few days, mostly while I've been laid up with a cold. Apparently someone had the foresight to tape the outstanding performance, for which I am eternally grateful.

My current favorite song (from the River in Reverse, at least) is officially "Wonder Woman." I liked it before, but Elvis sang the heck out of it at the concert and the audience was very much into it. The album itself is difficult to get into, that much is true, but I can say that all the music is polished and has an authentic New Orleans sound. The horns are far from corny, and sound nothing like the lovably cheesy "Punch the Clock" horns.

Elvis turns into the epitome of a bandleader when he's got a horn section onstage, and he clearly loves it. He must be reminded of his father's days as a bandleader. His grinning at the horn section, and dancing (which even included the occasional twirl) was just priceless to watch.

Concert highlights not on the album include: "Slippin' and Slidin'," Paul Simon's "American Tune," and "A Certain Girl" sung by Allen Toussaint with EC's Lennon-esque backing vocals ("What's her name?".. "I can't tell ya.") That song always makes me smile, even with EC not on lead vocals.)

Pictures I won't be posting here: Elvis posing with strangers at the stage door (I snapped away even when he was posing with other people). And a photo of the back of my head and a smiling Mr. Toussaint, who's holding my Sharpie and magazine.

***I should say that if Elvis is King, then Mr. Toussaint is the Duke (or another high rank!). He's as kind and gracious as Elvis, even moreso because he's clearly not used to getting fan attention. The night of July 11, I brought a magazine along, and he was fascinated by it, the cover of which featured him and Elvis. He even asked an assistant if they had a copy of it yet. Then, reluctant to sign over his or EC's face, he swapped my marker for a silver pen. (This all took quite a while, so I almost had a conversation with Mr. Toussaint, although my side of it consisted of "Th-thank you!") Later, in a contrast to his hesitancy, Elvis distractedly signed all over his own face.

I really feel so lucky to have done all this, especially because a year ago today I saw Elvis and Emmylou Harris at The Today Show!

    Top 5 Meme

Why I'm late in posting this: in my last post I mentioned that I had a sore throat. It led to a fever that lasted a few days. And now, a dozen disgusting Tylenols later, I still have to cough up a lung every five minutes. I HATE SUMMER COLDS.

Music Memoirs says: Top 5 ways that you'd describe your favorite band. (Be as silly, truthful and/or creative as you want to be):

I have to pick Elvis Costello and the Imposters/Attractions. They were on Decades Rock Live last night.

    1. Articulate. Elvis's lyrics can be, to borrow a phrase he once used in a song, "Like a chainsaw running through a dictionary."

    2. I have to say it... Easy on the eyes.
This photo is from the July 10 Beacon show.

(There's Pete Thomas in the background... he's cute too.)

    3. Virtuoso musicians on all sides.

    4. The hardest-working group in rock 'n' roll. In the past few years, at least, Elvis has been dragging them all over the world for countless tours.

    5. Gracious. Most of them will sign anything for you, unless Pete and Steve are feeling modest, and in that case they run to their limos and vans without looking back!

    Elvis at the Beacon

Here are a few pictures from July 10.

I won't ramble about the concert, except to say that it either 1) Made me like The River in Reverse more, or 2) Made me like the songs from TRIR that I already like, more. (I'm not quite sure which is true, considering he happened to play every one of my favorite songs from the album. And played them exceedingly well.)

And I won't complain about anything (I'll save that for my LJ), not even my sore throat and impending cold. Or my ugly photograph. Here I'm going to focus on the concerts, because the trip as a whole was an emotional roller coaster, since the first half of the trip was all about Elvis, and the second half was about dealing with some serious family situations. It is very hard to adjust to dealing with family problems when you've seen your hero the night before.

But I'll shut up. Details about the concert can come later. On to the picspam:

Allen Toussaint made it into that shot, fortunately... (At one point in the show a guy even screamed "Allen for President," and then another audience member had to repeat it to Elvis, who hadn't heard. EC: "Maybe you should think about running sometime, Allen!" Ah, even his slightest quip amuses me.)

    Music Memes

I missed out on a few from Music Memoirs because of my annual trip.

Top 5 songs that never fail to bring a smile to your face:

The Moody Blues - Lovely to See You

The Pogues - Streams of Whiskey

Elvis Costello - Love For Tender

    Herman's Hermits - Dandy

Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint - Wonder Woman

Something else that made me smile...giggle, rather... :

Elvis's Bush bobblehead. (Bad photo, but still amusing.)

Top 5 songs you're ashamed to admit that you like :

    The Spice Girls - Wannabe

Elvis Costello - Broken (a song he wrote with ex-wife Cait, and everyone seems to hate it)

Q Feel - Dancing in Heaven (Orbital Bebop) (obscure 80's thing)

Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

Kool and the Gang - Celebrate

    So Busy...

Tomorrow is July 4th, and I have to take part in a little firework-viewing ritual with the usual friends and family.

A family-visiting trip is also sneaking up on me and I'm not ready at all. (And my b-day is a week or so later and I still haven't made any plans.)

I have to sort out my digital camera so I can take photos on the trip (some of which will be concert pics...this will be a very busy, but short, trip). It does not help that I lost my new memory card last month. It had much more space than the last one but I never got to use it. And it wasn't cheap.

The batteries are an even worse problem. I don't understand rechargeable NiMH (or whatever) batteries at all. I used a generic brand last year and they all went dead within a week. Now I'm trying Energizer, which I bought a new charger for. But apparently a 15-minute charger harms the batteries, and you need a slower one. Too late, I can't afford another!

Also, I've heard that the batteries won't "form up"(?) until you charge and use them a few times. I don't have time for that so it had better not be true.

The first time I tried new batteries, my camera took about 5 pictures of the Moody Blues and then went dead. I had the closest Moodies seats of my life. Two years later, fully-charged batteries went dead in the middle of shooting pics of Elvis Costello. (Granted I'd already gotten some great shots at his show in Central Park earlier that week.)

I've had my Olympus camera for about three years and I still have so many issues with it. When I tried increasing the quality setting, my best picture (out of a load of throw-aways) looked like this:

But under similar conditions, using a lower quality setting, they looked like this:

I just don't understand and I probably never will. I mildly like my digital camera, but I bloody hate its batteries.

    Top 5 from Music Memoirs

I'm really late again, but this can just be my Monday treat instead.

Top 5 albums that cure the summertime blues....

The Moody Blues - Sur La Mer (this is my summer album)

    Elvis Costello - Spike

Herman's Hermits - There's a Kind of Hush All Over the World (and I'm finally getting it on CD! Yay!)

80s Wave - (a 2 disc set that I associate with summer...so it helps to cheer me up)

The Monkees - The Birds the Bees and the Monkees
