    Another Meme!
Third post in a row that contains a meme from Music Memoirs.

    Name 5 funny songs.
The Monkees - Gonna Buy Me a Dog (the Music Whore read my mind on this one)

The Beatles - You Know My Name, Look Up My Number

Elvis Costello - Honey Are You Straight or Are You Blind

The Lovin' Spoonful - Nashville Cats

The Rutles (parodies count, right?) - anything.

Name 5 songs whose lyrics never fail to make you say 'Is that what they really said?' (Clarification: songs with amusingly mishead lyrics. Example: Revved up with a douche, another runner in the night - is actually 'revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night.' This is one of the most commonly misheard lyrics from Blinded By the Light.)
The Kingsmen - Louie Louie (The too-obvious choice)

Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days (It always sounded like "We were cool on Christ"... heck, the whole chorus is unintelligible)

The Beach Boys - Help Me Rhonda (What is the first line? Dave Barry suggested "Since you put me down there's been owls puking in my bed")

The Beatles - Tax Man (Took me forever to understand "Declare the pennies on your eyes", due to his Scouse accent)

The Moody Blues - Peak Hour (I have no idea what they're singing, and the lyrics you find on the web don't make the slightest bit of sense either. "Billions of bees"? C'mon John, really.)

Name 5 Weird Al Yankovic parodies.
I don't know many but here goes:

    Eat It
    I Lost on Jeopardy
    I'm Fat
    My Bologna

I can't think of one more! Argh.

    Top Five on Friday

Same link as the last post...Music Memoirs

Top 5 "Live" Songs. (This could be songs from live albums or songs that are better performed live)

All right...here's my problem. The only live songs I know well enough to include are by two artists. So this is going to be a very predictable list.

The Moody Blues - I'm Just a Singer In a Rock and Roll Band

The Moody Blues - The Story in Your Eyes

    Elvis Costello - Clubland

The Moody Blues - Lovely to See You

Elvis Costello - Scarlet Tide (if only because he steps away from the microphone)

Five already?? Runner-up: Elvis Costello - Monkey to Man... or maybe Kinder Murder....

    Embarrassingly Late Meme

I'm finally getting around to this one from Music Memoirs, even though it's...erm...Thursday.

    Take Me Back Tuesday -

    1. What one artist would you like to travel back in time to see in their "hey day?" And Why?
The Moody Blues. They were completely different then. I even once had a dream where I had a time machine, and I kept trying to type in "1972" so I could go to one of their concerts. Didn't work.

    2. If you could go back in time to buy one musical related item that you wanted, but didn't purchase at the time, what would it be?
I'm not sure. I usually compulsively buy any music-related items that I want. (Like a 7" single I just ordered for no reason...but let's not go into that.)

    3. If you could travel back in time and give any artist/band a piece of advice, who would it be and what would your advice be?
Elvis Costello: Don't date the kind of women who are likely to write tell-all books.

    I accomplished something...sort of

Out of boredom (and love for Elvis) I managed to collect all the EC songs from the SXSW show in Austin, TX on 3/16/05 that are currently available on the internet. At least they're all the tracks I could find--it's a mere 8 out of 29. So I now have those on CD, not that it makes much of a live concert. *sigh*

    1. King Horse
    2. Chelsea
    3. The Delivery Man
    4. Mystery Dance
    5. Either Side
    6. I Can't Stand Up
    7. High Fidelity
    8. Why Don't You Love Me (Like You Used to Do) ***it was all worth it to hear this song***

These are the only ones I can find from a huge show that's really this long.

    *double sigh*

I think it's time to have another look at the beauty.

While I'm at it, here's Pete.

    And Steve.

Photoshop made these 3 very bad photos look decent. Yay photoshop.

    Top Five on Friday meme

    From Music Memoirs!

Top 5 songs/albums you listen to when you are stressed.

    1. Justin Hayward -Moving Mountains. Almost anything from this album can relax me.

    2. On the other hand, if I'm stressed to the point of frustration, the album Blood and Chocolate (Elvis Costello) seems to help me get it all out.

    3. Most Monkees albums are good at calming me down. They remind me of simpler times (for me at least...not simpler in general.) Like More of the Monkees, for example.

    4. Oddly this song came to mind... "Life in a Northern Town" by Dream Academy. It's beautiful and I know it would probably relax me if I was stressed.

    5. The Moody Blues -On the Threshold of a Dream. Because for one, I have very positive associations with this album. And two, it's so darn good.

But if all else fails, the most calming, wonderful thing I can do is look at this man:

    All This Useless Beauty

Yes, I had to use that title. Because all I'm going to do right now is admire the beauty... So enjoy! (And if you don't like him...too bad!)

Singing into his cheap guitar... and despite what the neck says, he doubts it once belonged to George Harrison.

First attempt at getting a shot of the silver shoes.

I am drooling on the keyboard now.

    And I love him

Now that I started to type this I can't think of anything to say. I've never met any of my favorite artists/heroes/obsessions before and last night I did. And I'm so in shock I don't even know what to say.

I'm going to try to do this musical meme from The Music Whore now instead. Lord knows if I'll be able to think straight at all.

What five bands/artists (past or present) would be your ideal concert line up and why?
Elvis Costello- He has to top the bill. He is magnificent.

The Moody Blues- I still love them. Though it's hard to remember that right now.

The Beatles- Boring answer but how could I not give it? (Since it says "past or present".)

    Duran Duran- Adds some variety.

I don't know... The Monkees maybe. They go hand in hand with The Beatles, for me.

Pick an artist/band and select five songs. Why are these your five favorite songs?
Sorry but I have to do it- Elvis Costello:

Couldn't Call it Unexpected no. 4- Unconventional melody that still ends up sounding beautiful. Words that I thought were only just interesting until I began understanding them frightfully well. Very powerful lyrics.

London's Brilliant Parade- Rare moment of nostalgia from EC. Beautifully sung. But not without the twist of irony that's expected from all of his songs.

King Horse- One of the best from Get Happy!!

Blue Chair- The first EC song I loved.

Man Out of Time- The second EC song I loved.

Which five songs have unpleasant associations and why?
I can't really think of any. Maybe "No Rain" by...can't remember... because of someone else's bad associations. So I think of their bad associations when it's on.

Which artist/band was your first crush?
I have no idea. If it was The Beatles, then I've forgotten by now. It could have been The Monkees, and when I was little Peter was my favorite for some reason. But I really don't know.

Did you ever see him/them in concert?
Let's pretend my above answer was The Monkees, so the answer is yes. I don't know what tour but I remember them talking about Justus.

Do you still have memorabilia of them?
Yes... CDs, one shirt, autographs by 2 of them, and the entire TV show on VHS.

That meme actually distracted me for a minute, but I'm just so...in shock. That's really what it is. I have to go relive the moment in my mind about 100 more times. I don't know.

Not going to say much about this...

I promise I won't, because I know some people who'll see this, don't want to know. Though a lot of things were really, really crappy and maybe that would actually make The Music Whore feel better instead of worse? :)

And I don't know if this will make you feel better or worse, but I know you might enjoy it, so...

(PS to Andrea- I know you like pix, so let me know if you're in the mood for more, OK? )

    Ramblings... on The Delivery Man

I don't know why I keep changing my mind about The Delivery Man. When I bought it, I loved most of it.

My initial reaction to the opening track was "Oh my god...this has no melody...the rest of the album better not be like this..." Of course now it doesn't bother me.

Didn't like "There's a Story in Your Voice" due to Lucinda Willaim's apparent drunkness. (At least that's how she sounds to me.) For a period of about 5 minutes I began liking the song for some reason and put it on a CD mix. Now I have to skip the song whenever listening to the mix.

Then I started disliking "Heart-Shaped Bruise" since it's a duet too. I just want to hear Elvis's voice, not any women he gets to sing with him. That sounds mean. Oh well, that's always my reaction when any woman or man, who's not a member of The Moody Blues, sings with Justin Hayward (except maybe Annie Haslam--I like her voice.)

Then "The Scarlet Tide" bored me. I tried playing it on the guitar and that made it a bit more interesting.

"She's Pulling Out the Pin" is one of my favourite tracks, and it's not even on the American version. I had to order the Japanese CD to get it. That is so wrong.

The other day though, I put in the bonus disk of the Deluxe Version and was so enamoured with the in-between song banter, and so enjoyed hearing alternate takes, that I listened to the actual album again and loved almost every bit of it. (But still not Lucinda Williams.)

So out of boredom I put this little box on the blog that says "Buy this" and put a lovely picture under it. Sadly I'll probably stop loving the album in another week, but it'll be nice while it lasts.

    Randomness

~Got the deluxe version of The Delivery Man today. Whee. Let's see if I ever remember to listen to it. (Bonus tracks aside, it's my 5th version of that album. That's sad.)

~Got my concert tix in the mail at last. But if it's General Admission, why is there a seat number? I'm going to have to kick somebody now.

~I am dreading the opening act at said concerts. If this Tift Merritt isn't good, I'm going to be very annoyed for..an hour? Is that how long opening acts are?

~Got the album George Harrison on CD, finally.

~Just for fun, and because I'm bored, here are the first 10 songs winamp plays when I put it on random.

    1. Tom Petty - Love is a Long Road
    2. Justin Hayward - Songwriter p.1
    3. Justin Hayward - London is Behind Me
    4. Nick Lowe - The Rose of England
    5. Justin Hayward - Raised on Love
    6. Justin Hayward - Songwriter p.2
    7. Nana Mouskouri - Morning Angel
    8. Elvis Costello - You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
    9. Elvis Costello - She
    10. Justin Hayward - Stage Door

What's with all the tracks from Songwriter?? Not my favourite Justin album.
